Masingita Mall 4-in-1 Marathon, “Imagine not running in the village"

The weekend of 12th September was another episode in of many of Tshwantsho’s firsts. It is also the first piece I’m penning in a while. It was our first time going to Giyani, after previously reaching as far as Venda. This is a trip I was looking forward to for a while, and it finally happened. I smell Tzaneen next.

After travelling as far as Mall of the North, I realized that that’s where the trip actually starts, in Polokwane. We were the official photographer for the Masingita Mall 4in1 Marathon 2026. We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the race, the Masingita Mall, and the Masingita group of Companies by extension.
The 2026 Masingita Mall 4-in-1 Marathon proved that it is more than just a sporting event. Inherent in it a sense of belonging and identity. There is that thing about things happening in your own neighborhood. As thousands of athletes and supporters converged on Giyani for the fourth edition of the race, the marathon delivered elite competition while generating economic opportunities for local businesses and surrounding villages. That’s the power of sports tourism. Small confession, I only remembered that I didn’t book accommodation on the week of the race despite getting recommendations earlier. The whole of Giyani was booked. Lesson learned. That’s good for business though.
Upon arrival on Friday, we headed straight to collections for a meet and greet, as well as a bit of content. Got to see the landlord, Dr. Mike Nkuna, the Chairman of the Masingita Group. He had just opened another mall in Gauteng earlier in the month. I still wonder if I would maintain his level of humility with half of his achievements. Down to earth, humane and socially accommodating. The Kaizer Chiefs people were also at collection, and would also be at a waterpoint on race day. We saw some of the familiar faces from Polokwane and surrounds, as well as some of the village kids now resident in Gauteng. It is because there’s nothing like running at home. My basic Tsonga carried me though all the “ahee, minjhani” that I had to do.
The event featured the 42.2km Marathon, 21.1km Half Marathon, 10km Race and 5km Fun Run and remains an official qualifier for the Comrades Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon. With a simple route, one would have had to go way out of their way to get lost. The race continues to grow into one of Limpopo's premier athletics events and contributes to the overall growth of the social running culture in the province. I still got the familiar “Malume” greeting, so I was home.
The race attracted visitors from across South Africa, resulting in increased business for accommodation facilities, restaurants, transport providers, retailers and informal traders in Giyani. Organizers encouraged visitors to explore local attractions and businesses during their stay. The Masingita Mall 4-in-1 Marathon has become one of the most important sporting events in Limpopo. It creates economic opportunities, promotes tourism and showcases the hospitality of Giyani and its people. I need to return as a tourist. Of course, I’ll have the familiar tourist look with a camera strapped to my neck.
The race creates unity among communities. People come together as volunteers, supporters and participants, and that spirit of togetherness strengthens social cohesion. One of the lasting impacts of the marathon is its ability to inspire young athletes. Local and neighboring athletics clubs and community organizations were represented throughout the event, providing a platform for aspiring runners to witness elite performances firsthand. Residents from villages throughout the Greater Giyani area participated as runners, volunteers, vendors and spectators. Many local entrepreneurs used the event to sell food, clothing, crafts and other products to visitors. We enjoyed some traditional music and dance after the race, and enjoyed some warm hospitality and a meal.
Imagine not running in the village
Young people from Giyani and surrounding villages can now see top athletes competing on their doorstep, or backyard. The effects will be seen in years to come. That inspiration is invaluable because it encourages discipline, healthy lifestyles and the pursuit of excellence. From its beginnings as a community-focused initiative, the Masingita Mall 4-in-1 Marathon continues to evolve into a nationally recognized race that promotes health, wellness and social cohesion. The presence at the Comrades Marathon expo this year communicated this fact in unambiguous terms.
As the runners crossed the finish line and the crowds celebrated another successful edition, the broader victory belonged to Giyani and the surrounding villages that continue to embrace and support the event. The race was awesome, the waterpoints were well stocked, and we had a great time shooting the race. It was beautiful seeing cattle, donkey, sheep and goats crossing the road, going bout their business as the runners chased their finish times. I didn't see chickens crossing though.

Another first was the drone shots, which added a new offering to our experience. We take this to our next race. We have made meaningful acquaintances and like all the others, we do not take for granted. We met people from Facebook, hugged a few, almost kissed some babies, and loved everything about our outing. We hope to grow with the race and see even greater things on the horizon. We look forward to the 5th edition, and hopefully the numbers will double. It’s good for photo sales you know. To the host club Giyani Gallopers, there are so many potential runners there running without licenses. I guess you get the drift.
The Giyani people are warm, and without fail I was greeted warmly by strangers where I was shooting. Got to experience the village by foot. I’m still talking to my wife about a second wife, but we will certainly return to Giyani when we are ready to extend the family.
Inkomo Giyani, thanks for the love!!
Tshwantsho Media loves you back!!!
